Abstract Based on institutional theory, integrating knowledge transfer and legitimacy, this paper puts forward an integrated research framework, to explore the influence of institutional distance on the entry mode choice of Chinese companies. The empirical results show that the larger the regulatory distance, the greater possibility to choose sole proprietorship of Chinese enterprises; On the contrary, the larger the normative distance, the greater possibility to choose joint venture of Chinese enterprises. At the same time, the normative distance can moderate the relationship between the regulatory distance and the entry mode of Chinese companies. These findings have important implications for the entry mode choice of Chinese companies in the future.
