Abstract This article firstly reviewed the study of airport development and metropolitan area evolution. Then it researched the theory of coupling relationship between metropolitan area and airport economic zone. Next, it analyzed the coupling mechanism of Zhengzhou airport economic zone and Zhongyuan metropolitan area. The research revealed that the comprehensive order parameter between the two systems gradually increased as the year growth, and their coupling relationship had stepped into antagonism stage. Finally, suggested a series of strategies to promote the coupling relationship.
