Abstract Because the tourism satellite account system is not complete, we can’t obtain the real and effective statistics data of tourism employment directly, thus accurate estimates of total tourism employment become the key of the study on tourism employment. In this article the tourism added value is separated from the tourism-related industries based on the existing statistical data, and then on this basis, the paper estimates the total tourism employment in China by comparing tourism with other industries in the output elasticity of employment and the dynamic changes of employment elasticity in recent years. We can see that the leading role of tourism to employment is not strong, and the role of “employment reservoir” has not been played, and the relevant policy recommendations have been proposed.
