Abstract The author summarizes the basic features of China's existing land acquisition compensation system, analyzes its defects in system, compares three methods of reform, presents the land acquisition compensation mechanism in the context of harmonious development of the urban and rural areas and points out that only by distributing the land-transfer fees properly in both urban and rural areas, defining the ratio of the appriciation benefit of the land that is made a public possession and protecting the rights of farmers can the harmonious development of urban and rural areas be achieved and the whole social welfare be maximized.
