Abstract Adopting provincial penal data model, this paper analyzes the impacts of population urbanization and urban-rural development gaps on education urbanization. The results show that the progress of population urbanization positively affects the advancement of education urbanization. The income gap between rural and urban residents has an inverted U-shape relationship to the education urbanization, which is promoted by the widening gaps in educational expenditure and education quality between urban and rural areas. Among the controlled variables, regional economic development, cancellation and merging of rural schools and transportation infrastructure all show positive correlations with education urbanization. And the impact of cancellation and merging of rural schools verifies the significant promoting effect on education urbanization from China’s large-scale adjustment of rural schools since the new century.
