Abstract Based on the nested Logit model, this paper investigates the product quality of Chinese export products to countries along the Belt and Road route. Then this paper uses Chinese inter-provincial panel data from 2004 to 2014 to study the impact of intellectual property protection on export quality. The study finds that after controlling the effects of endogenous and other factors, the intensity of provincial intellectual property protection in China has a stable positive impact on China’s exports to the countries along the Belt and Road route. The results of sub-regional estimation show that the impact of intellectual property protection on export quality presents inter-provincial differences. It is a significantly positive impact that the level of intellectual property protection has on the quality of exports in the eastern provinces, the central provinces, as well as the key and non-key provinces of The Belt and Road Initiative. Whereas the impact of provincial intellectual property protection intensity on export quality is negative and non-significant in western provinces.
