Abstract This study is a quantitative analysis about ports competition intensity, cooperation depth and coordination degree. Based on synergetic theory, the authors performed an interactive coupling-coordination model to evaluate coordination degree of port group. Firstly, the authors stated the harmonious development mechanism of port group. Secondly, the authors put forward the evaluation model with reference to the coupling degrees function in physics and contribution index. Finally, taking Shandong Peninsula port group as an example and using panel data of 2003 to 2012, the authors carried an empirical study to test the validity of the evaluation model. Verification result shows that the coordination degree of Shandong Peninsula port group has taken on periodic features and a continuation in the upward trend. This study provides guidance and support on evaluating coordination degree of port group.
