Abstract The impact of different policy regimes on the quality of FDI in China is analyzed empirically with time series data by principal component regression analysis. The results show that marketization degree, the attitude to FDI and the import control of overseas funded enterprises are positively related to the quality of FDI. Opening up and environmental control are negatively related to the quality of FDI. The reasons for the negative correlation between opening and the quality of FDI might be related to the measure of opening up degree, its development characteristics and the uneven distribution of FDI.
