Abstract Based on the theory of precautionary savings, the authors make a comparative study of the consumption behavior of urban and rural residents in the same framework. The findings indicate that compared with urban residents, rural residents are more cautious in spending, less sensitive to the changes in interest rates and affected more by uncertain factors. However, consumer inertia and institutional transformation have no significant influence on either urban residents or rural residents
