Abstract Similar export trade structure in developing countries will result in the increase in the supply of similar products and deteriorate the performance of foreign trade development. The panel co-integration test based on the data of42 developing countries in which the trade terms deteriorated during the period of 1995-2008 shows that the trade structure similarity in developing countries deteriorates the price trade terms and lowers the income trade terms. Therefore, in order to improve the trade performance, developing countries should adjust their trade development strategies, decrease the export structure similarity and avoid excessive competition
