Abstract Achieving high-quality development of manufacturing industry is the cornerstone of building a modern economic system and achieving the high-quality development of China's economy. The driving force for promoting the quality improvement of the manufacturing industry depends not only on the implementation effect of the innovation-driven development strategy in the new era, but also on the far-reaching impact of the demographic transition. Based on the provincial panel data from 2001 to 2016, this paper analyzes the impact of innovation capability and demographic changes on the quality of manufacturing development through the sysGMM method. The study found that: The impact of the innovation ability on the quality of manufacturing development has obvious spatial heterogeneity; The demographic transition significantly affects the quality of manufacturing development through labor cost effect, age structure effect and human capital accumulation effect. While the population aging and labor cost increase put pressure on the quality of manufacturing development, the human capital accumulation effect has not yet fully exerted a positive impact. Accordingly, different types of regions should develop differentiated guidance policies.
